What Memecoins Really Are

4 min read

A memecoin can start as a joke, a community experiment, or a fast-moving market. None of those beginnings remove the risk.

A token with a story

Memecoins are crypto tokens whose attention often comes from culture, humor, community, and speculation rather than a mature product. Attention can arrive quickly and leave just as quickly.

Launching on pump.fun

Platforms such as pump.fun let people create tokens with a low barrier to entry. A bonding curve is a pricing system where the token price changes as people buy or sell. More buying generally moves the price up; selling can move it down.

Liquidity is not safety

When a token reaches a threshold, it may move to a decentralized exchange. That transition does not prove the project is trustworthy. Always separate launch mechanics from quality or safety.

A concrete rule

Before treating a launch as meaningful, check liquidity, holder concentration, mint authority, freeze authority, and whether the creator has a history. A token moving 2x is a calculation, not evidence of safety. Liquidity can be thin enough that a modest sell changes the price dramatically.

Checklist

Before acting: verify the claim or address; write the thesis; calculate the dollar loss; check liquidity and permissions when relevant; set a review time; and confirm the amount will not affect essentials.

Do this today

Open an official block explorer or chart/pair page such as Solscan or DexScreener, verify the URL, and compare market cap with liquidity.

Worked practice

Use this lesson on a small, hypothetical example before using it on a live decision. Start with a $1,000 portfolio and write the exact dollar amount you would risk. Then write the claim you are evaluating, the screen where you will verify it, and the time you will review it. If the answer depends on a screenshot, a private message, or a promise that cannot be checked, label it unverified. Next, imagine the price moves against you by 20%, 50%, and 90%. Do not predict the recovery; write what your plan says at each point. A written response exposes whether you have a rule or only a hope. Finally, read the plan aloud. If it sounds different from what you told yourself before the trade, keep the written version and wait. This exercise takes less than 10 minutes and gives you a record you can compare with the next decision.

Decision rehearsal

Run the decision in three passes. Pass one is observation: describe only what is on the screen, including the timestamp, market-cap display, liquidity display, holder view, and the exact wording of the post that brought you there. Pass two is interpretation: separate facts from guesses and write who benefits if attention increases. Pass three is choice: select wait, research more, or do nothing, and explain the choice in one sentence. If your choice is wait, set a specific review time rather than refreshing continuously. If your choice is research, name the source and the question it must answer. If your choice is do nothing, keep the note; declining an unclear setup is a valid result. This sequence prevents a vivid story from silently becoming a trading instruction and makes your future review more honest.

Mini story

Composite story: not a real person. A bonding curve is a pricing mechanism, not a quality score. Imagine a simple classroom example: the first buyers move a token from $0.01 to $0.02, while later demand pushes it to $0.04. That doubling does not mean the next buyer has an exit. Solidus Labs reported that from January 2024 through March 2025, more than 7 million Pump.fun tokens had at least five trades, while only about 97,000 kept more than $1,000 in liquidity. The report labeled about 98.6% as pump-and-dump or rug-pull-like, while Pump.fun disputed the report; these are base-rate warnings, not proof of intent for every token.

Key takeaways

  • Memecoins are extremely high risk and speculative.
  • A bonding curve describes pricing mechanics, not future performance.
  • A successful launch does not equal a safe investment.

Today's action

Open an official block explorer or chart/pair page such as Solscan or DexScreener, verify the URL, and compare market cap with liquidity.

Take the quiz yourself

Choose your answers before revealing your score.

1. What does a bonding curve change?
2. Does a launch guarantee safety?
3. What often drives memecoin attention?
4. What does a bonding curve describe?
5. What should you inspect beyond a launch chart?
6. Which response best follows this lesson's rule?
7. What should you do when a claim cannot be independently verified?
